The oldest records of shilajit can be traced back to some 5000 years ago and the substance finds its mention in ancient texts such as ‘Charaka Samhita’ and ‘Sushrut Sahmhita’. While the exact date of when it was discovered cannot be known, it is believed that the Himalayan villagers were the ones who discovered it.

Shilajit holds immense importance in Ayurveda and it is said that shilajit can treat every curable disease that is known to man. Till date, it continues to astound us with its incredible benefits.

This fascinating substance forms as a result of the plants and other organic matter getting decomposed on the mountainous rocks. It takes several years for shilajit to form and the best shilajit is found in the Himalayas.

But have you ever given a thought to how shilajit is obtained after it gets formed? If this is something that interests you then you are at the right place. Here, we’ll tell you all about how shilajit is actually obtained from the rocks.

How is shilajit obtained?

When shilajit is found on the rocks of the mountains it contains a lot of impurities. These rocks tend to contain sand, humus, bacteria, gravel as well as other microbes. To make it safe to be consumed, these impurities need to be removed first. While there are a few methods to do this, we will tell you the most common ones here.

First, the rocks containing the shilajit are obtained. And then, either of the methods mentioned below follows.

Method 1

  • As the first step, a huge vessel containing water is taken. The rocks containing the shilajit are immersed in this water for a duration of 2 days.
  • In the duration that the rocks have been immersed in water, they dissolve into a kind of a thick paste.
  • More water is then added to this thick paste to dilute it. The mixture, after the water is added to it, gets heated.
  • After the heating process is complete, the next step involves filtering out the shilajit from the rocks.
  • A sieve is then used to carry out the filtration process and the entire mixture is sieved a few times to ensure that the shilajit is completely separated from the rocks.
  • So, after the filtration is complete, what remains in the vessel is just shilajit in liquid form.
  • As the next step, milk is added to the shilajit and it is heated again. Milk not only enhances shilajit’s properties but also sweetens its taste a little.
  • As the next and final step, a decoction of triphala is added to it. Triphala is known to get rid of any remaining impurities as well as enhance shilajit’s properties.
  • After the addition of triphala, the entire mixture is heated again so that any remaining water content is removed and what remains is pure shilajit.
  • At the end of all of these processes, what remains is dark-colored thick shilajit.
  • It is then cooled down before it gets stored.

Method 2

  • A decoction of triphala using water is first made.
  • Shilajit (intact on its rocks) is then added to this triphala decoction and kept immersed in it for about a day.
  • The triphala-shilajit mixture is then heated after keeping the shilajit immersed for about a day.
  • When it is being heated, shilajit starts to dissolve and starts floating on the surface of the decoction.
  • This shilajit that floats atop the decoction is then collected and added to another vessel.
  • It is then heated again in order to thicken it. Once it is thickened to the right consistency, the heating is stopped.
  • The shilajit is then left to cool down and then gets stored.

The shilajit, after it is obtained from the mountains, goes through all these processes before it finally reaches you. Here, we shared the two most commonly used methods with you.
